Will Solar Panels Work During a Power Outage?

Short answer
Usually not. A standard grid-tied system is required to stop exporting when the grid goes down, so the panels stay idle during an outage. To keep power on you need a system designed for backup: a battery, an inverter capable of island operation, and a way to safely isolate your home from the grid.
Why grid-tied systems shut down
When the CFE line goes dead, line workers may be repairing it. A grid-tied inverter detects the loss of grid and disconnects (anti-islanding) so it cannot energise lines that should be dead. This is a safety feature, not a fault.
What a backup-capable system needs
- A battery, sized for the loads and hours you want to cover.
- An inverter that can form its own local grid (often called hybrid or backup-capable) — not every inverter can.
- An automatic or manual transfer/isolation device that separates your home from CFE during an outage.
- Usually a backup sub-panel with only the essential circuits, so the battery isn’t drained by everything at once.
Why “I have panels” or “I bought a battery” isn’t proof
Having panels on the roof doesn’t mean they can power your home during an outage. Likewise, a battery connected in a way that doesn’t include transfer equipment and a backup-capable inverter may not supply anything when the grid fails. Ask your installer to show, in writing, which circuits will run during an outage and how the system isolates from the grid.
Portable power stations are a separate option: they power appliances plugged directly into them and don’t connect to your home wiring unless a qualified electrician installs proper transfer equipment.
Questions to ask an installer
- Will this system provide power during a CFE outage? Which circuits?
- What happens if the outage lasts overnight, or several cloudy days?
- How does the system isolate from the grid, and is that included in the price?
- Can the panels recharge the battery while the grid is down?

Can I add a battery later?
Sometimes. It depends on whether your inverter supports batteries or whether a separate battery inverter can be added. Ask before buying a grid-tied system if backup might matter later.
