Can You Install Solar on a Condo or Rental in Puerto Vallarta?

Short answer
Sometimes, but rarely without permission. In most condominiums the roof is common property, so the administration or owners’ assembly decides. Renters need the owner’s written consent. Portable power stations are often the realistic alternative.
Who controls the roof?
Mexican condominiums operate under a régimen de propiedad en condominio, with internal rules (reglamento) and decisions taken by the administration and owners’ assembly. Rules vary by property, so read your own reglamento rather than assuming US or Canadian HOA practice applies.
Metering and wiring
Each unit usually has its own CFE meter, often in a shared meter room. Running cables from the roof to your unit’s panel crosses common areas, which typically requires approval. Shared-area systems (e.g. for pool pumps) belong to the building’s own CFE service.
Structure, waterproofing and insurance
Ask who is responsible if roof penetrations cause leaks into the unit below, and whether the building insurance covers added equipment. A structural assessment may be required for flat slabs carrying many panels.

|---|---|
| Can owners install solar panels on the roof? | ¿Se permite a los condóminos instalar paneles solares en la azotea? |
| What approval is needed — administration or assembly? | ¿Qué aprobación se requiere: administración o asamblea? |

If you rent
Get the owner’s written consent before any fixed installation. Most renters choose removable options: a portable power station for outages, and efficiency changes (inverter mini-splits, thermostat habits) for bills.

Can I put panels on my balcony?
Small plug-in arrangements for charging a portable station may be possible, but check building rules, wind exposure and safety. Don’t connect panels to building wiring yourself.
